Detroit is the birthplace of many of hip hop’s most respected names including Eminem, Big Sean, and Royce Da 5’9. Continuing the city’s proud heritage, Rhyme Scheme brings his life experiences growing up in the “D” with a honest street leveled perspective that’s many of XXL’s Freshman lack. Peep game and check out his new single, Business Over Pleasure today.
When did you start performing?
I’ve been performing for a long time but when you grow up in Detroit you earn your respect spitting bars at barbershops. That’s where I learned to turn my poetry into freestyle. I officially started performing in 2007.
Name some of the artists who have inspired or influenced you.
Nas and KRS-1 – both of these artists have such incredible depth to their lyrics. They can pull together lyrics and rhymes and educate you at the same time. I learned a lot from them actually.
How would you describe your style?
My sound has echoes of the boom bap hip hop from the 90s fused with modern delivery.
What separates you from other artists?
My lyrics and diversity. I can rap in a few languages and my lyrics come from an honest place through my experiences in life whether it be from my time in Iraq or a love story. I also believe in making positive music.
Do you have any major offers on the table?
I am fortunate enough to be finding success without a major offer. I have been offered several distribution deals including though Universal. I am getting some great feedback and interest in Business Over Pleasure featuring Young Noble and Yukmouth.
What advice would you offer other aspiring artists?
Stay true to yourself. Don’t try to find success by imitating others. Make music you can stand behind and you are proud to promote. And invest in yourself and your music. If it isn’t the best you can offer, put more into it.
Any shout outs?
I want to thank Be’n Original for this opportunity. True Essense who has designed my official Business Over Pleasure shirt. I also want to thank DJ J Green, Revolver from Cobaine, DJ Blackwater and DJ Ron G. A shout out to Yukmouth and Young Noble for their collaboration on Business Over Pleasure, it was great to work with these legends. And also all those who have supported the Rhyme Scheme movement from LA to London. I also want to give a special thanks Rexx Clutch who leads my management team through direct Rhythm Entertainment.
