Nia Wilson’s sister Malika Harris has set up a GoFundMe page, earning upwards of $70 thousand, in an effort to get justice for her sister who was fatally stabbed by a white man at an Oakland train station.
The nation has since shared an outcry of love as they mourn the death of the 18-year-old. One of her paternal half sisters Lahtifa Wilson, 26, was also stabbed and is currently in the ICU.
John Lee Cowell is the man suspected of allegedly stabbing the Wilson sisters. The 27-year-old white supremacist has been reportedly charged with murder and attempted murder. Cowell’s Monday arrest came after a 24-hour manhunt in Oakland. He made his first court appearance on Wednesday.
According to the New York Times, Harris feels the violent act committed against her sister was indeed “hate crime,” “an act of racism.”
Actress Anne Hathaway took to Instagram to express her feelings, even placing the burden on the white people of America to stand by the Black community in just trying times:
“The murder of Nia Wilson- may she rest in the power and peace she was denied here- is unspeakable AND MUST NOT be met with silence. She is not a hash tag; she was a black woman and she was murdered in cold blood by a white man.
White people- including me, including you- must take into the marrow of our privileged bones the truth that ALL black people fear for their lives DAILY in America and have done so for GENERATIONS. White people DO NOT have equivalence for this fear of violence. Given those givens, we must ask our (white)selves- how “decent” are we really? Not in our intent, but in our actions? In our lack of action? Peace and prayers and JUSTICE for Nia and the Wilson family ily xx”
As far as the urban community, we are stunned. Our hearts are overly heavy for the Wilson family. Rest In Peace Queen!
