Recap: Kool Keith Performs at BRIC’s Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival

The 43rd annual BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival at Prospect Park continued with one of the pivotal figures in the history of hip-hop, legendary rapper/producer Kool Keith, who also shared the stage Chicago-born rapper/singer Mari World.

The evening commenced with Mari World, who took to the stage alongside his multi-talented band, giving a high energy performance of their notable songs including “Brand New Faces,” “Dollalujah,” “Our Love,” “Knowledge,” and “Tarmac.” They continued with “Home,” showcasing a strong vocal range on “How Does it Feel,” followed by “Atlas,” and concluded the set with “Hustle.”

Before leaving the stage, the members of Mari World showcased each of their instrumental and vocal talents via solo spotlight moments and invited the audience into their musical family with chants of “Mari,” while the crowd responded at cue shouting “World.”

Up next, the headliner of the evening, Bronx-bred legendary prolific rapper Kool Keith, delivered an eccentric performance with an extensive catalog of songs including “Cheesecake,” the controversial “Sex Style,” followed by an introduction to his all-consuming alter-ego Dr. Octagon as he performed “Blue Flowers.”

Kool Keith, accompanied by his DJ and hype man, kept the crowd rocking to his psychedelic funky and groovy beats layered over his 90s golden-aged lyrical flow.

The BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival will continue through September 18th with upcoming performances including Wizkid, D-Nice with special guests, Glass Animals, Rita Indiana, Mr. Eazi, Trombone Shorty and Yaeji.
