Heavily supported by hip-hop legend Trina, Nia Amber is putting her own touch on today’s R&B. While paying homage to the greats that have come before her, she remains determined to bring something all her own in every possible way. She’s an one of a kind talent, and she’s not afraid to show the world what she can do.
Can you tell us about your start in the industry?
I actually started off in a girl group named Amity Love. I learned so much from being a part of a group with five girls. It’s a lot of work! There were so many ups and downs, but I definitely learned valuable lessons about teamwork. Once we parted ways, I decided to pursue a solo career and introduce the world to Nia Amber.
What has your experience been like as a woman in the industry?
The grind is always harder for women—especially dark-skinned women in the game. Although the world has become more accepting of dark skin, colorism remains prevalent. I use this small obstacle as motivation to embrace myself and all women of color. So many beautiful women of color have paved the way and served as an inspiration to me and many others. Brandy, Kelly Rowland, and Jazmine Sullivan are a few of my favorites. These ladies have inspired me to keep going despite the odds. I am willing to do whatever it takes to break down the barriers and show the world the true essence of Nia Amber.
How does it feel contributing to the rise of new school R&B along with Summer Walker, HER, and numerous other strong female artists?
It’s exciting! I can’t wait to share my talent with the world and collaborate with all the other dope women in R&B. We all have so much to offer in our own way. I’ve heard people say, “R&B is dead,” but these women are definitely making sure it stays alive, and so will I.
Do you feel supported by other women in R&B already?
Yes! There are so many talented and supportive up-and-coming artists, and we have connected in our own way! Social media is powerful, and it allows you to network with lots of different artists and collaborators. This has been really exciting for me.
How does it feel being backed by Trina?
Working with Trina has been a great experience. I’ve been able to touch so many stages and perform in front of thousands of people. I’m so grateful to have a hip-hop legend supporting me. She pushes me to grind harder and be self-driven. Her words of advice all the time are “go harder” and make the people curious to know who Nia Amber is. This makes me think outside of the box and keeps me on my toes! Many talented young artists are making moves, so the competition is stiff. She inspires me to keep my head in the game and reminds me daily to push through!
You speak on your struggles accepting yourself and your skin. With your confidence exuding, can you tell us what helped you to see yourself in the light you do now?
Although this has been a tough journey for me, I have learned to embrace my flaws and all! I came to realize that God made me exactly how I’m supposed to be. Because he makes no mistakes. Once I came to that realization, I began to see everything from a different perspective. I began to embrace my beauty and truly love me for me. I am in a great space, and I truly believe that self-worth and self-love should be first in everyone’s life.
What can you tell other young black girls that working on building their confidence?
Self-love is the absolute best love! You have to love yourself enough for everyone. Know that you are beautiful in every way; truly believe and be confident. Embrace all of you, flaws and all!
Nia means purpose. Do you feel you’re fulfilling your purpose through your art?
Absolutely! I’ve never felt more confident and alive. Since the age of 6, I’ve always loved performing and being on stage. I am usually not very expressive, so performing has always been my outlet. My purpose in life is to be on stage entertaining, doing what I absolutely love, but it is also to touch people through my music.
What was the inspiration for your new song “DA”?
Everyone woman has had a DA. When we heard the beat, we instantly got a sexy vibe from it. We started a conversation and came up with the idea of DA. I think the best songs are created through conversation and feeding off the vibe of the room.
Night with Nia being an exclusive performance, will this be something you choreographed yourself?
No, Swing my way was actually choreographed by Anthony Valasquez from Miami, and Shemeka Ann from Atlanta choreographed DA. We all joined forces along with my amazing team to put on a beautiful showcase. I’m excited for everyone to see what we’ve been working on.
You’re releasing a package March 11th. Tell us about that?
DA, the official single, will be dropping on March 11th, 2022. I’ll also be launching the DA dance challenge! I can’t wait to see all my girls put on their heels and show out! Stay tuned for many more surprises. The video for DA and The Night with Nia will both be super dope!
