BLK Helps Black DC Residents Find Peace Amid Inauguration Weekend

As the presidential inauguration coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, BLK, a popular dating and social app for the Black community, is launching #BLKFreedomWeekend. The initiative offers Black residents in Washington, D.C., a chance to escape the heightened tensions expected during the weekend by providing flight credits to destinations of their choice.

BLK will select 10 winners from its D.C.-area user base to receive flight credits, enabling them to leave the city and celebrate MLK Day in a way that feels meaningful. The effort is designed to help residents avoid potential stress while honoring the legacy of Dr. King.

“Dr. King’s vision of freedom includes the right to prioritize our own peace and joy,” said Jonathan Kirkland, BLK’s head of brand and marketing. “This campaign is our way of honoring that legacy and giving our community the chance to reclaim this holiday.”

A recent BLK survey revealed widespread concern among Black residents in the D.C. area:

  • 80% reported feeling anxious, concerned, or angry about the upcoming inauguration.
  • 59% cited potential violence or unrest as their top safety concern.
  • 41% said they would prefer to leave the city for the weekend to avoid the anticipated chaos.

The memory of the January 6th insurrection, coupled with the juxtaposition of a political event and a day celebrating equality and justice, has heightened worries for many.

Through #BLKFreedomWeekend, winners will be able to choose their destination—whether visiting loved ones, exploring a new city, or simply taking a break from the inauguration crowds. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences online, reflecting on how they chose to honor Dr. King’s legacy in their own way.

“Our survey highlights the emotional toll this weekend takes on our community,” Kirkland said. “By giving Black residents of D.C. a chance to step away, we hope to offer a moment of peace and freedom to truly celebrate Dr. King’s vision in a meaningful way.”

For the Black community, MLK Day is a time to reflect on both progress and ongoing challenges in the fight for justice. BLK’s campaign provides an opportunity to celebrate the holiday free from the stresses of an unusually tense weekend.
