Reality stars and entrepreneurs Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson, known for their HGTV series Married to Real Estate, understand the challenges of running a business. The couple recently spoke about the lessons they have learned in business and why they partnered with TurboTax Business to support small business owners.
“We’re entrepreneurs, married, but also married in business,” Sherrod said. “So we have multiple companies. And it’s been a roller coaster of a ride with immense highs. But there were moments that we made mistakes and moments where we had a bit of doubt.”
One of their biggest takeaways has been the importance of preparation and delegation. Sherrod noted that early on, they struggled with managing time, stretching money to scale, and trusting a team to handle specialized tasks. With experience, they realized they could have done some things differently.
“But now that we know better, we do better,” she said. “And we decided it was obviously an incredible partnership with TurboTax because they are all the tools. They have all the tools and all the support that we wish we had when we first started our businesses.”
For Jackson, the partnership with TurboTax aligns with their passion for empowering others. “Yeah, it makes sense for us because we’re all about giving back,” he said. “They’re all about the entrepreneur, the solopreneur. And they want to be accessible 24-7 pretty much worldwide. And that’s an amazing tool for a business owner or someone that just broke into the business to have because a lot of us starting out just don’t know where to turn to.”
Sherrod recalled how many business owners try to handle everything themselves to save money but end up making costly mistakes. “So, you start to think, well, then I have to be my own receptionist. I have to be my own attorney. I have to be my own marketing manager and my own accountant. Wrong,” she said. “You may not know all the deductions as a business owner that you could be taking. You may not know some of the key solutions and strategies that a professional tax expert can help you with.”
She emphasized that TurboTax ensures accuracy in business taxes and provides support during audits. “If inevitably you experience an audit, which we have, and you will be scared out of your mind, you have support through that. So I think every business owner needs those tools,” she said.
Jackson also pointed out how TurboTax integrates with other business tools. “And the great thing about TurboTax is that it’s integrating,” he said. “What I mean by that is you can use all of their platforms across the board, MailChimp, TurboTax, and QuickBooks.”
Sherrod added that many people do not realize that QuickBooks and TurboTax are part of the same company, allowing businesses to create a seamless financial strategy. “You can interlink them and have a full business strategy, a full business system, essentially, that ensures your success,” she said. “And allows you now to get back to what it is that you originally got into business for, doing what it is that you’re passionate about, what you love.”
Sherrod and Jackson hope their partnership with TurboTax will help business owners avoid the struggles they once faced. “If you get your business taxes done, then you can also get 20% off your personal,” Sherrod said. “So one stop shop solution.”
