Several writers took to Twitter to announce their departures from Vibe and Billboard magazines on Tuesday.
According to reports, the parent company Valance Media is looking to reduce labor related expenses by more than $9 million dollars.
The layoffs are directly related to the financial distress caused by the coronavirus pandemic with 25% of those cut being journalists.
Many widely respected journalists used their platforms to recommend their colleagues for employment opportunities elsewhere.
Several staff members who remain employed now have reduced salaries. The company plans to allow those impacted to recoup their losses pending future profit gains.
