This week, ESPN debuted their ESPN Cover Story featuring tennis star, Coco Gauff; as written by ESPN senior writer, Alyssa Roenigk. ESPN Cover Story is the sports network’s monthly release that highlights the biggest stories in spirts and the most captivating athletes.
In this new release, Roenigk put the spotlight on Coco Gauff, a young rising athlete who was raised on and inspired by none other than Venus and Serena Williams. Her parents, Corey and Candi – who were also college athletes – had no intentions on raising a professional athlete but they always encouraged their daughter. And she eventually fell in love with tennis. At just six years old, Corey realized he was no tennis dad but he dedicated his time to his daughter by learning the game which led to a 10-year plan and the start of an epic journey.
Years later, in 2018, Coco Gauff won her first junior Grand Slam title at the French Open. With the title under her belt, she became the youngest junior girl’s No. 1 in history and signed three major endorsement deals!
Remember her idols, Venus and Serena? Well, in her first round of play at the Wimbledon, Coco got the draw of her dreams against her idol, Venus – and won! She was instantly put on the map and into the spotlight!
This cover story by senior writer, Alyssa Roenigk, continues the story as she sat down with Gauff to discuss her journey as a professional tennis player and her life off the court. Read, or watch, the story below!
