April Walker, a pioneering figure in urban fashion, was honored at the unveiling of the April Walker Apparel Design Creation Stu/deo at Pensole Lewis College in Detroit, the only design-focused HBCU. The event, part of the fifth annual National Black Footwear Forum, was held in collaboration with the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA). Industry figures, media, and select friends and family attended, celebrating Walker’s influence and achievements.

The studio, a creative hub, features walls filled with images of Walker’s journey. A life-size mural by Sydney James highlights her storied career, contributing to the overall atmosphere of innovation and legacy.

The National Black Footwear Forum promotes inclusivity and diversity, gathering professionals, students, and executives annually. Walker, known for building the streetwear industry, has worked with Run-DMC, LL Cool J, and Wu-Tang Clan, and designed for Tupac in Above the Rim. Fab Five Freddy called her the “Coco Chanel of hip-hop urban fashion.”

Reflecting on the recognition, Walker said, “The opening of my design stu/deo is a full-circle moment. After over 30 years of hard work, I’m honored to see this dream realized.”

Walker envisions the stu/deo as a space to inspire new designers and foster innovation. “It connects the past with the future and serves as an incubator for creativity,” she said.

Her mission emphasizes advocacy for social equity in fashion, encouraging opportunities for people of color. Her program has launched several successful brands, illustrating her dedication to community and culture.

“This space symbolizes a heartfelt full-circle moment,” she said. “It’s a testament to the power of vision and the dandelion effect.”

Walker’s legacy continues to be celebrated by major platforms, including Forbes and CFDA. “I owe it all to God for guiding me on this journey. Being acknowledged and having the chance to impact others is truly gratifying.”
