When did you decide to pursue a career in music?
I embarked on this journey in music 10 years ago.
You have a very soulful and authentic approach to R&B, name some of your biggest influences?
My biggest influences include Marvin Gaye, Prince, Michael Jackson and Usher.
As someone who is very popular, but remains an independent artist, what would you consider when signing with a major label?
Ownership is important to me as a songwriter and producer. Profiting from my likeness is fair and makes sense. These are the things I would consider before going into a major deal. I would want a partnership more than anything else.
Tell us about your latest project?
The AshtnMrtn EP started out as a prequel to an LP I was working on, but later became a reintroduction or sorts. My debut showcased my diversity as an artist, whereas this project settled more into a sound. Sonically its a little darker and more sexier. This new music is gonna go even further.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is soulful and eclectic. I’ve gravitated towards Soul music because of how it feels. It’s gritty, passionate and unapologetic. Musically I’m more of a mixed bag so I categorize myself as Alt-R&B.
Are there any particular things you look for with music compositions?
I look for a feeling. There’s a certain feeling you get when you hear the one. I think all music artists and listeners alike can relate.
Do you have any advice for aspiring singers looking to build a fan base?
Be you—consistently. Never stop being who you are. In a world of billions we all have a tribe of people who relate to who we are and are waiting to hear their stories told.
