When you write own your songs, your character shows in everything you create. New Jersey based singer D’Zak is not only a talented artist that creates great music, but also and more importantly, a great human being.
How old are you? Some of my fans have thought that I’m as young as 19, but it’s fun to hear the different guesses when I’m out and meet new fans.
When did you start performing? I’ve been performing since the age of 9. I started out singing in church choirs, emulating what I would hear on Sunday mornings, on the radio, and listening to cassettes, CDs, and mp3s.
Name some of the artist who have inspired or influenced you? There are so many that I draw from, but to name a few: The Temptations, James Brown, Dru-Hill, Usher, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown and Brian McKnight.
How would you describe your style? My style is built from the ground up. It’s powerful but laid-back. Since I can remember, I listened to classic and contemporary Gospel and R&B. As I grew up, I embraced pop music. Those influences makes themselves known through my music and when I perform. My goal is to take my listeners on a musical journey. Whether it’s to share an emotional moment, a triumph, a heartache, a new love, personal growth, and most of all…have a good time.
What separates you from other artists? My story is one that hasn’t been shared yet. My passion for this life, combined with the support I have from my producer, has allowed me to be able to express my story musically. And the closer we get to completing this project, the more excited I am to share my journey with everyone.
Name some of the major artists you have performed with? I’ve performed with The Ebony’s. I’ve also performed for Billy Paul, “Mr. Me and Mrs. Jones”, at a private function.
Do you have any major offers on the table? I don’t want to get ahead of myself. I am working on an E.P., and there are plans to make major moves in the near future.
What advice would you offer other aspiring artists? The road to success in this business is not an easy one. Be prepared to fight for this as much as you want to breathe. Ups and downs come with every part of life, and this business is no exception. Take the time to HONE YOUR CRAFT. Always push yourself to become better than you were yesterday.
Any shout outs? Huge shout out and thank you to my manager, producer, and friend, Mr. Ricky Style. Without him, I wouldn’t be the entertainer I am today. Shout out to Levina Lye, keep making and sharing real and relatable music. Shout to my all friends all over, especially my main circle of friends: Kori, Thai, “Keg”, Christina, Dave, Ryan, Mike, Dex, Taylor, Pnut, Tommy G, and Marquise Cole. Thank you, Urban Mag, for the feature and support.
