Being recognized in your city is one thing, but when you have fans across the globe, you are on whole other level. Boy Face is on the verge of global stardom.
When did you start performing?
Moms would have me acting in plays as a kid. I think I my first performance in front of industry tastemakers was in NY at a Maria Davis showcase at Soul Cafe. But before then I tested the waters at middle school talent shows, and in high school at house parties, (rapping for Big Homies on the Set.) After high school, I’d put together my own shows with my crew and we’d perform at those. Practice makes perfect.
Name some of the artists who have inspired or influenced you?
I’m inspired by every artist that takes their music seriously. For the longest time, I’d have an opinion on what made an artist good or bad. But finally realized that my opinion really doesn’t matter. Millennials came in the game and redefined that artist sh*t. So now I like listening to the artist I can relate to like SchoolBoy Q, Tupac, Migos, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick, Common, Groove Gang, Hov, Lil Half Dead, Figg Panamera, Rihanna, Tee Grizzly, Kehlani, J Cole, Rae Sremmurd, Dave East, Kanye, and Treach. But the main artists who inspire me most is any artist that has ever fought to uplift those that are oppressed.
How would you describe your style?
My style is like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. My artistry has taken on many different forms. Gangsta to Trap to Edm. There’s a lot of street sh*t I can’t rap about because I’m not a snitch, and I don’t self-snitch. But nowadays, I’m removed from the streets (so I can speak about more sh*t) so a new style is being developed.
I’m in the process of doing for rap what The Weeknd is doing for Pop & RnB. Rebuild that sh*t from the ground up.
What separates you from other artists?
I’m black in America so not much separates me from them on the surface. But when you really become a Boy Face fan you realize I’m a huge f*ckin weirdo. I’ll rap about random stuff political in the same song. My style is like mixing Molly and Percocet with Acid (analogy for these fiend rappers). Based on my unique music, if I branded myself like a Yachty or Vert, I’d be that n*gga.
Name some of the major artists you have performed with.
I did a song with Mac Lucci from the Dogg Pound. I’ve opened up for Maino, Njomza, Yalee and Juelz Santana. I did a song with MassPike Miles. And I did a song with platinum artist Kevin Lyttle. oh, yeah and I’m proud to say I rapped on stage with Proof (RIP) at a side stage during the Up In Smoke Tour.
Do you have any major offers on the table?
We did a single deal with Blanco Y Negro in Spain, there a pretty big EDM label. I think that’s a major feat for me as a rap artist. Also did a single deal with Lifted House in Sweden (another Edm label), and BIP Records in Belgium or wherever. I just think major US labels don’t know how to market me. (I met with Universal and DefJam). I’m verified on social media and sh*t but labels are too blind to know wassup. I did do a subsidiary deal with a label thru EMPIRE earlier this year ( which is a major indie) but No budget was in place, so I terminated. I’d say there’s some interest. The right budget and offer (no strings) would make something happen with a major. Preferably a 50/50.
What advice would you offer other aspiring artists?
My advice is to become a brand like MIGOS and Lil Yachty. Don’t put out music until you figure out how to brand yourself. And stop listening to other people’s music so much, because it will dumb down your own creativity. Other than that learn the music business, and entertainment law so you don’t get f*cked for your publishing and royalties. And lastly, focus on creating a platform that you can get paid from because streaming isn’t the move for an unsigned and indie artist.
