Brooklyn, we go hard!
With the NBA season just days away, the Brooklyn Nets hosted their annual “Practice in the Park” this past weekend, for the sixth time. As a way to prepare for the upcoming season and give a preview of what’s to come, the Nets – who boast a new roster – took over the popular Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 2 courts that sit right along the East River. Iconic views of Manhattan’s skyline filled the backdrop, setting the tone for the home team.
The free, open-to-the-public event began shortly around Noon, as media and fans, alike, filled the sidelines and bleachers. As a warm-up to the main event, the Nets invited influencers and celebrities to a 5-on-5 game which got the crowd ramped up early. The line-up of popular social media influencers and personalities included Rotimi, Shiggy, Giselle “Gi-Gi” Diaz, Andrew & David Fung, and more.
DJ Ria of SiriusXM also took on hosting duties for the day, while Brooklyn’s own, Joey Bada$$, performed a closing set, amplifying the sounds of the borough. The Brooklynettes Dance Team, Team Hype, and the Brooklyn Nets Beats Drumline, also put on some electrifying performances. As the momentum carried on into Sunday afternoon, it was finally time to introduce the Brooklyn Nets players!
Kyrie Irving, despite the controversial moments he had last season, got a round of applause as he was introduced – however, he was not in uniform. One by one, Kevin Durant, Patty Mills, Markieff Morris, Seth Curry, Day’Ron Sharpe, and the rest of the team, were announced to the crowd as they ran onto the court. A new addition to the squad, Ben Simmons, received an amazing response from the fans as well. Coach Steve Nash was also in attendance along with his youngest daughter.
Preventing themselves from any injuries ahead of the season, the Nets took to the courts to play some quick (but competitive) rounds of knockout, around-the-world, and other pre-season friendly games. Witnessing this new group of players bonding and bringing so much energy as they head into the season, gives fans a beacon of hope. After the Celtics cut their Finals run short last season, the Nets are surely aiming to make it back into the Playoffs.
