Focus Features tapped Broadway actress Cynthia Erivo to play one of America’s greatest freedom-fighters, Harriet Tubman.
The trailer for the new biopic, released on Tuesday, has since garnered much anticipation for its release.
Erivo is widely known for her role as Celie in ‘The Color Purple’ Broadway revival, for which she took home a Tony, Grammy, and an Emmy award. She is also a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
The acclaimed performer took to Instagram to express her excitement, she stated, “I wish I had the words to describe what it feels like to be bringing this to you. I’m grateful to have been a part of the telling of this story and I hope I will have made you proud come November 1.”
“I put my blood, sweat, soul, heart, and tears into it because it deserves nothing less. All love” she added.
R&B singer Janelle Monae and Country singer Jennifer Nettles serve as additional characters in the film.
‘Harriet’ is expected to hit theaters on November 1, it will also be screened at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival.
