As a Black-owned independent media outlet, we take pride in the perseverance it took to remain in this game for so many years.
We believe there is plenty of room, if not an urgent need, for more media outlets to support black culture – hip hop is black culture.
But, what we’re not going to do is allow another black media outlet to hijack our slogan/tag line.
For over a decade, we have been using “We don’t just write about urban culture, we live it” as a way to describe the authenticity of our brand of journalism and writing.
We wanted to make it clear that unlike the many faux-black or white owned black media outlets out there, our editorial coverage is from people who love and respect our culture – not vultures here to exploit it as a way to enrich themselves or elevate their personal brands. We live and love this shit.
Our message to the lazy person, who either didn’t put much care into making sure they weren’t stepping on anyone else’s intellectual property or thought no one would notice, is this:
Create your own!
You can’t front like you care about the culture while stealing from the very people who uplift it. Don’t be that site.
I am a friend and/or fan of members of your staff and contributors and I enjoy the great content you provide.
However, I am not going to be silent while you remix a part of a brand I have invested years to build independently.
An attorney reached out to me personally this morning regarding the situation and while we would rather not take legal action against another black media outlet, we will if we must.
Just change it to something else, preferably something all your own. You can do it. It’s not that hard.
Here’s a link to a tagline generator if that helps at all. Just saying!!!!!
