NEW JERSEY (AP) — Sean “Diddy” Combs, the legendary hip-hop mogul and pioneer, is poised to add another jewel to his crown as he receives the prestigious Global Icon Award at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). The live broadcast of this star-studded event will grace screens from New Jersey’s Prudential Center on Tuesday, September 12th, at 8 PM ET/PT.
Diddy’s exceptional career, marked by unparalleled achievements and continued influence in music and beyond, has earned him this coveted honor. Over the span of more than three decades, he has notched two #1 albums on the Billboard 200 and an impressive five #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
In a much-anticipated return to the iconic MTV stage, Diddy will also perform at the VMAs, marking his first appearance since 2005. His legacy with the VMAs dates back to his debut performance of “Mo Money Mo Problems” in 1997. Subsequently, in 2002, he graced the stage with a memorable medley that included hits like “Bad Boy For Life,” “Pass the Courvoisier (Part 2),” and “I Need A Girl (Parts 1 & 2).”
Notably, in 2005, Diddy hosted the VMAs from Miami, leading an orchestra into a performance featuring Snoop Dogg on stage and a video performance tribute to the late Notorious B.I.G. His contributions to the awards show also include winning a Moon Person for “Best R&B Video” in 1997 and the “Viewer’s Choice” award in 1998.
In addition to receiving the Global Icon Award, Diddy finds himself in contention for four other awards this year, all for his work on “Creepin” (Remix) and “Gotta Move On.” These nominations encompass two nods for “Best Collaboration,” as well as recognition in the “Best Rap” and “Best R&B” categories.
