It is exceptionally important to be mindful of the company you keep, even if you don’t suffer from mental illness. But, imagine if you do.
Imagine if you are a billionaire Grammy-award winning multi-platinum producer/artist/fashion mogul with a history of bipolar episodes. The very last kind of people you need around are enablers.
While we don’t know what actions Kim and the rest of her clan have taken behind closed doors, what we have seen in public view is a lack of true loyalty.
Before you make the short-sighted argument that she has been loyal to him by standing by his side with the whole “Kanye is entitled to his opinions even if they’re wrong” public position, read further.
Loyalty does not necessitate agreement.
In fact, when the person you are loyal to is doing the wrong thing like saying slavery was a choice, it actually means disagreeing. It would be disloyal to stay silent or do nothing and knowingly allow someone to harm themselves including their ties to the community that elevated them.
It was his unapologetic blackness that set him apart and made us become fans. Who would think the man who called out a sitting president on behalf of Black people would turn against us in the ways that matter most.
He is no longer the ally of long ago. Many now say he’s the worst kind of enemy.
And this is not about her lack of melanin, which plays into the negative stereotype of Black women being perceived has hyper-aggressive and confrontational.
This is about loving strongly and though it is not exclusive to women of color, struggle and systemic oppression have a way of developing emotional strength you won’t find in locales of the rich and famous.
Love is wanting the best for someone, but more importantly, wanting them to be their better selves.
In choosing someone who unconditionally supports/enables you, it becomes increasingly hard to grow and better yourself in a positive way regardless of gender, sexual preference, or the nature of the relationship.
We should want to better ourselves and the people we love. No one can say Kanye has been better with Kim.
