Reflecting on the Improvements and High Spirits at Essence Festival
It’s been few weeks since Essence Festival, the annual celebration of Black culture and excellence, returned in full swing this year, delivering a better experience than the previous one. While the event had its initial hiccups during media credential pick-up, the overall atmosphere of kindness and positivity overshadowed any inconveniences. With improved communication and exciting activations, the Essence Fest showcased its commitment to uplifting the Black community. From Teja Smith, who had a public spat with the brand last year, enthusiastic endorsement to revealing the dedication of brands during difficult times, this year’s festival demonstrated its enduring significance.
One notable improvement was the incorporation of New Orleans culture into the festival, thanks to the efforts of Hakeem Holmes, the Vice President of the Essence Festival of Culture and a native of the city. The essence of New Orleans and its people was seamlessly woven into the fabric of the event, giving attendees a deeper connection to the vibrant city. While some attendees expressed frustration with Friday’s flooding and its impact on accessing the Superdome for concerts, the festival team could not control the forces of nature. However, they made significant strides in other areas, ensuring a more enjoyable and immersive experience for all.
The organizers of the Essence Festival have clearly taken criticisms from previous years to heart, striving to address as many concerns as possible. The commitment to improving communication and addressing concerns was evident, thanks to the efforts of Holmes and his team’s openness to feedback and dialogue. This willingness to engage in open and honest conversation serves as a reminder that the Essence Festival is a platform for our voices, our concerns, and our aspirations.
Despite the improvements and positive atmosphere at Essence Festival 2024, one missed opportunity was the absence of a comprehensive exhibition within the convention center, chronicling the festival’s 30-year history. The celebration of such an important milestone in Black History felt somewhat incomplete without dedicated activations honoring the festival’s journey. Magazine covers, a timeline showcasing its growth, and additional activations solely focused on the 30-year anniversary would have added depth and resonance to the overall experience.
Notably, some activations appeared scaled down, shining a spotlight on the challenges faced by brands amidst dwindling diversity, equity, and inclusion budgets. However, brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Target, Mahogany Hallmark, and L’Oréal made a clear statement of their unwavering support for the Black community, even during these unprecedented times.
Essence Festival 2024 went above and beyond in elevating the political experience, making the Global Economic Impact stage more prominent and opening up the conversation with Vice President Kamala Harris to the public. The inclusion of Teja Smith, who went viral in 2023 for criticizing the lack of focus on the important issues facing voters, and the Get Social team to cover the event from a political perspective was a testament to the festival’s commitment to diverse voices. Organizations like When We All Vote took center stage, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement.

While Essence Festival made significant strides in various aspects, one valid critique emerged from some attendees, particularly elder women. They expressed a desire for more conversations and activations dedicated to women aged 40 and above. In a society that often marginalizes and overlooks mature women, it is crucial to consciously recognize and honor their contributions. Essence Festival, which was built on the backs of these women, should prioritize creating spaces that celebrate and empower them, ensuring they feel seen and valued.
Recap of Superdome Performances:
The performances at the Superdome were a mix of highs and disappointments. The Cash Money Reunion on Friday, while enjoyable, felt slightly disjointed and left fans longing for a true reunion experience. Lil Wayne’s absence from performing with the Hot Boys and not including songs from his Cash Money era was a letdown. Additionally, Turk’s absence added to the feeling that it marked the end of an iconic era.
Usher’s performance on Saturday, where he performed his entire Confessions album, was a standout moment. However, there was confusion surrounding how the set ended, leaving some attendees questioning what had transpired.
Sunday brought an amazing show by Victoria Monet and a legendary performance by Janet Jackson, showcasing her unparalleled talent and stage presence.
The tribute to Frankie Beverly and Maze, while intended to be a celebration, left some feeling uncertain and unsure about its purpose. It seemed more like a goodbye rather than a heartfelt tribute.
While the performances at the Essence Festival 2024 were impressive, there were valid concerns about the curation of the lineups. The festival could have taken more care in selecting artists with a better flow and cohesiveness, ensuring a more seamless and satisfying experience for attendees.
As we reflect on Essence Festival 2024, it is essential that we recognize the significance of this cultural event and the impact it has had on Black women at large.
