You have lawyers and publicists, but rarely do you find someone who excels as both. Sandi Kane is not only a brilliant attorney, but also one of the most creative public relations executives in the game.
You are not only a publicist, but you are also a lawyer. Tell us what inspired you to pursue both careers.
My 8th grade teacher Sister Barbara Ann told me that I would make a great attorney after a Benedict Arnold trial project. I took my role seriously as the District Attorney and I wanted to ensure that Benedict Arnold was found guilty of treason. Ever since then I had the bug but I also wanted to be a doctor but I ultimately decided that a career in law suited me better. My publicist career came later on in life. It fell in my lap. I have to thank DJ Will of YAC Radio, Inc. He asked me to join the team as a publicist. After, I started working with YAC Radio, I branched off into SK Public Relations, LLC and it has been a great experience!
How does your legal expertise aid you as a publicist and vice versa?
Both careers require similar attributes. You must be able to communicate effectively. WRITING persuasively is key! You must create strategies that best suits your clients needs. Anticipating future problems and how to tackle those issues is essential.
If you had to choose one career, which would it be and why?
I wouldn’t be able to choose. I’m blessed to love both professions. I love practicing law because I am able to help my clients navigate their many issues. I love my career as a publicist because I am also helping them navigate their careers through a proper public image.
What would you say is the biggest misconception that people have regarding public relations?
Many people believe that hiring a public relations professional will automatically result in overnight success. There is a lot of strategic planning involved.

Share your biggest contribution to the culture.
My biggest contribution to the culture is through my volunteer work at charitable organizations like RIP THE STIGMA which focuses on Mental Health in the minority community. Renew 1804 which contributes to various causes in Haiti and Creole Image Honors which recognizes members of the Haitian community doing great work which benefits Haitians and the world wide community.
What advice would you offer an aspiring lawyer or publicist?
Never GIVE UP! I have faced many challenges in both careers and instead of giving up, I analyzed every set back and learned from it. You must continue learning. Also, never put yourself in a box. Since becoming a lawyer, I dabbled in radio, podcasting, film, documentaries and more. You discover yourself everyday! Never let your profession or anyone tell you that you can not explore other avenues. Life is meant to live!
