The family of NBA Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo has expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming love and condolences they have received following his passing. In a heartfelt statement, Mutombo’s family acknowledged the global outpouring of support after the death of the former basketball star, humanitarian, and philanthropist, who passed away after a prolonged battle with illness.

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and condolences we have received from people around the world,” the family said. “Dikembe was a servant of God, a wonderful husband, father, humanitarian, and athlete. He touched countless lives on and off the court with his generosity, compassion, and unwavering dedication to improving the lives of others.”

Mutombo, widely known for his shot-blocking ability and his humanitarian efforts, had been battling health issues for two years. The family expressed that the kind words and condolences offered, particularly in recent weeks, have been a source of immense comfort during this difficult time.

In their statement, the Mutombo family extended special thanks to the medical teams involved in his care. They acknowledged the Multi-D Team within the Piedmont Brain Tumor Center, Shepherd Rehab Hospital, NBA Physician Dr. Leroy Sims, and several other physicians and healthcare professionals, including nurses, therapists, and home-care providers who supported Mutombo during his final months. Charles Benton, a home-care provider, was specifically mentioned for his dedicated care.

The family also thanked their NBA and Georgetown communities for their unwavering support, recognizing the significant role these organizations have played in their journey.

A private service for the family is planned in the coming days, with a larger event in collaboration with the NBA to celebrate Mutombo’s life and legacy to be held at a later date. The family also encouraged those wishing to honor Mutombo to donate to the Dikembe Mutombo Memorial Fund, which supports causes close to his heart.

The statement concluded with a heartfelt appreciation for the public’s continued respect for their privacy as they cope with their loss.

Dikembe Mutombo, a Congolese-American player, was celebrated not only for his impressive basketball career but also for his lifelong commitment to humanitarian work, particularly in Africa. He is survived by his wife Rose and children Carrie, Jean-Jacques, and Ryan.
