Interview: Erik Young, CEO of Audios

To say Erik Young is a genius is an understatement. The CEO of Audios holds several patents and is about to revolutionize the way we consume our music on a major scale. This is truly Black excellence.

Like many young Black men in America, Audios’ CEO Erik Young’s story begins under the harshest of circumstances. As a child spent many of his early teenage years doing whatever it took to help provide for his family.

“I was an entrepreneur before I ever went to college. I think a lot of us have the same story. It was out of circumstance. I remember my momma complaining about buying a thirty-dollar pair of shoes. For her, the budget was tight… To solve that problem, I started mowing lawns for twenty dollars each. Eventually, I saved up to buy the clothing and sneakers I wanted without putting the burden on her. In the streets, you want to be like what is around you. Opportunities may as well not exist if you don’t know about them or have access to them.”

While his determination to overcome poverty may have led him astray for a short time, he eventually changed his life for the better, enrolling in college where he applied his intellectual gifts and earned a degree in computer engineering. He would work at several Fortune 500 tech companies, including five years at HP where he was granted his first patents and published two technical papers.

But during his time at HP, Young concluded that he was undervalued. This was despite the lucrative and cost-saving technological innovations he created that were worth several millions of dollars.

“During my first year, I created a TCP energy benchmark. It was a special project that was measuring the power of computers in the data centers. You were able to measure a computer’s power consumption, even if it was made by a different brand. That was when I made up my mind and decided to launch my own business.”

This led to the launching of Audios, a technology company specializing in the sound and music related products.
While much of the details Young shared are still unavailable to the public, the first product the company is expected to release will take the way speakers are utilized at events to the next level. Event attendees will be able to experience music or listen to presentations without having to be concerned about tripping over wires, damaging equipment, or injuring themselves. The high-quality Audios speakers connect wirelessly without the use of cables or Bluetooth, all while delivering sound at the pinnacle of industry standards.

“My life has been successful because I have learned a formula that is almost guaranteed to work depending on how you perceive it. Perception is everything. I pursue mentorship. For example, if you are known to be the best editor and I want to learn to edit, I want to you be my mentor. When I choose a mentor, I listen to everything they say and apply it wholeheartedly. If it worked for them and they found success, why wouldn’t it work for me? This formula has helped me obtain a level of success of my own.”
