When it comes to representing hip hop to the fullest, few compare to New York’s own Erika Hamilton. Not only has she put in more work in these streets than most, she does it for right reason — the love of it.
As one of New York’s most authentic and respected DJs, what are your thoughts on the current state of music?
I think music is about to be in an extraordinary place, I have a lot of faith in “the zoomers”. I think the BLM movement and the omnipresent fight for social justice in America today are going to have a very powerful and positive impact on music. These kids have a lot to say, and within the next year, I think we’re going to experience a lot of creative greatness.
What has been the key to your legendary career?
Ha, I wouldn’t call it legendary but thank you. I think every DJ, artist, or performer needs to understand that it’s a 24/7 job. DJing at a gig is the easy part. Getting booked to DJ is a non-stop process.
Share the best advice you would offer an aspiring DJ.
There is no finality to your skill level, you must always grow. Go hard and be your best, whether it’s a crowd of five or five-hundred. Complacency is your worst enemy. I pay more attention to how a DJ plays for a small crowd over a large crowd.
The real ones do their best no matter who is or isn’t in the room, the rest are just in it to feed their ego.
How has the evolution of technology affected your role?
Not mad at Technology, if I still had to carry records, I would have probably had to slow down or retire. Serato is the reason I can rock 4hr sets, 5 times a week, all over the city and all over the world.
Do you feel that the role of the DJ has changed with the emergence of streaming platforms and playlists?
No, I think DJs have a lot more to offer than just selection.
As someone who has dedicated your life to the culture, what are your thoughts on the current sociopolitical climate?
I think DJs have a moral responsibility to defend and/or stand up for a movement like BLM. Our entire livelihood is predicated on black music. Obviously Hip-hop, but everything from house to EDM, country to rock music, can all be traced back to black innovators.
