Justin Coleman and Kelvin Alexander, two Black chefs and entrepreneurs from New Jersey, are the visionaries behind Bake’n Bacon, South Philadelphia’s first bacon-themed restaurant. Known for their one-of-a-kind, delicious cuisine, the duo discussed their journey, which began with a food truck in 2019, and their plans to expand their culinary empire across the globe.

What inspired your collective decision to become restaurateurs?

JC: After the passing of my younger brother in 2016, he visited me in a dream and gave me the idea for Bake’n Bacon. I made it my goal to honor him with our bacon empire. I created a unique menu as a memorial for him

As the restaurant industry can be competitive and challenging with high turnover rates, how does this impact your company’s vision?

JC: Our belief in God and the vision that he gave us. We look at obstacles as opportunities. We know that all of the ups and downs are part of the journey, and we should face them accordingly. At times, it means that we have to work longer hours to ensure the success of the business.

Bake’n Bacon is an excellent concept restaurant, are there any plans for brand expansion into other parts of Philadelphia or other regions?

JC: We are Philadelphia’s first and only bacon-inspired restaurant, and we are excited to be pioneers of a unique concept. We want to expand in our home state of New Jersey, Philadelphia, and more states and countries. This includes franchising the restaurants and the food trucks.

What are some of your favorite dishes on the menu that guests must try?

JC: My favorite signature dishes are our pork board (feeds 4-6 people), lobster mac, bacon caramel burger, and fall-off-the-bone ribs. If you love sweets, you’ll love our homemade pound cake with our signature bacon caramel sauce. It’s the perfect way to complete your dining experience. My favorite of our signature cocktails is The Smoke Show (our take on an old-fashioned), The Morning Wood (our smoked margarita paired with a charred pineapple), and our Summer Ice (a seasonal summer drink). The beer lovers have to try our Tast’e Bacon (our bacon-inspired beer) Last but surely not least, we are known for our hangin’ bacon, which has gone viral several times.

What does the word longevity mean for Bake’n Bacon and both of you?

JC: Longevity for us means being consistent in our food quality, and presentation, and remaining humble throughout the journey.

KA: The word longevity means establishing a brand built by people who have come from nothing and learned the true value of hard work.

What impact does Bake’n Bacon plan to have as a food destination and a symbol of success and inspiration for others?

JC: We want to give inspiration to people who have dreams, although those dreams may not be their current reality. But by seeing our success stories through our diligence through trials, tribulations, and resilience, others will know how to make their dreams come true.
