The deal is said to be worth the veteran’s minimum, with Griffin earning just over $2.9M. The price tag puts the Celtics over their cap but it’s definitely worth the investment. At 33 years old, Griffin is past his prime years – having contributed many seasons to the Clippers and the Pistons – but he still offers up reliable offense off the bench, and most importantly, in the front court. With Danilo Gallinari’s injury and Robert Williams’ recent surgery, Griffin will be able to provide Boston with an effective presence in the paint.
Leading up to Boston’s training camp, it was evident they needed a veteran to fill the role and recognized that Griffin would be the perfect, necessary fit. What solidified the Celtics’ decision was witnessing Griffin’s recent workouts in Los Angeles – they obviously liked what they saw and moved swiftly with the signing.
With a solid starting line-up, Griffin is expected to come off the bench to provide quality minutes. And we may even witness the revival of Lob City (the Boston Edition). As the start of the season nears, Celtics fans are anxious to see how this new squad and coach will do. We can’t f*ckin’ wait! In the meantime, here are some Blake Griffin highlights.
