Unhinged and Immoral has quickly become a hit with its candid and unfiltered approach. How did the idea for the podcast come about, and what sets it apart from others in the space?
Jamila: Mecca and I were live recapping Shannon Sharpe’s leak, and the response was incredible. The audience’s enthusiasm led us to consider starting a podcast together.
Mecca: During that live, viewers commented on how it felt like a FaceTime chat. It mirrored our real conversations, which made us realize we had something special to share.
How do your personalities complement each other on the show?
Jamila: We share humor and similar interests, allowing us to bounce off each other effortlessly.
Mecca: We have many shared views but also healthy disagreements, creating a dynamic mix that keeps the show engaging.
The podcast tackles real-life scenarios with humor and relatability. How do you decide what topics to discuss?
Jamila: We draw from current news and pop culture. One central topic can lead to hours of discussion, showcasing our ability to adapt.
Mecca: We let our spontaneity guide us. While we attempt to outline topics, we often veer off script, which keeps it organic.
How do you both navigate creative differences in the direction for specific episodes?
Jamila: We haven’t faced major disagreements yet, but if we do, we’re both direct communicators, which will help us navigate any issues.
Mecca: Our long friendship gives us a strong understanding of each other. We already know how to handle disagreements, which makes it easier.
Humor plays a big role in your content and conversations. How do you see comedy and laughter as tools for connecting and addressing serious or relatable topics?
Jamila: Comedy has been a healer for me and is central to our friendship. Laughter builds trust and makes serious conversations more accessible.
Mecca: Coming from funny families, we naturally find humor in everything. This shared background strengthens our friendship and approach to tough topics.
What have you both learned about each other and how has your dynamic evolved since starting Unhinged and Immoral?
Jamila: I’ve learned that we’re excellent at shifting topics. Our discussions often take unexpected turns, keeping things fresh and engaging.
Mecca: Jamila’s humor always surprises me, especially when I catch her expressions or comments during playback. The podcast has deepened our friendship.
For both of you, what has been the most rewarding part of building this podcast, and what do you hope listeners take away from each episode?
Jamila: The audience feedback has been incredibly rewarding. I hope listeners leave with deeper insights, even amidst our comedic discussions.
Mecca: Reflecting on our college talks about making an impact, it’s fulfilling to see the positive response. We aim to foster genuine connection through our content.
You’ve each built a strong presence as creators and entrepreneurs. What advice would you give to others looking to build an audience while staying authentic?
Jamila: Stay selective and intentional about your topics. Focus on what you can genuinely contribute, and engage with your community for real-life inspiration.
Mecca: Be yourself, even if it sounds cliché. Grounding yourself is vital, as the internet can be harsh. Mental strength helps you navigate negativity.
How do you balance running other independently successful businesses while co-hosting the podcast and maintaining your social media influence?
Jamila: Building a reliable team has been essential. My manager keeps me organized, while our producer ensures we stay on track. Ambition drives me daily.
Mecca: Seeking help early on was crucial for us. I apply the same principle in my personal business, knowing that collaboration leads to success.
What trends do you both see shaping podcasting in the next few years?
Jamila: I see podcasts becoming the modern talk shows, akin to what our parents enjoyed with Oprah and Arsenio Hall.
Mecca: While TikTok’s future is uncertain, I believe podcasts will grow even bigger. They are the new frontier for engaging content.
What’s next for Unhinged and Immoral? Are there any exciting plans, guests, or topics fans can look forward to?
Jamila: We’re thrilled to introduce special guests and explore live shows in the coming year.
Mecca: Exciting plans are on the horizon, including special guests, live shows, and crossovers with other podcasts. Stay tuned!
