Simon & Schuster/Atria Books have released the official cover and preorder link to their Summer 2021 release Baby Girl: Better Known As Aaliyah by critically acclaimed journalist and author Kathy Iandoli.
The book is an in-depth look at the life and career of Aaliyah, and how she has not only impacted the world of music, but also fashion, film, and hip-hop culture.
It will feature never before heard stories and exclusive interviews, as well as a deeper look into some of Aaliyah’s most pivotal moments.
The project was originally slated for an August 24, 2021 release (the day before the 20th anniversary of Aaliyah’s passing), but fan demand has moved the publication date a week early to August 17, 2021 as well as an early premiere of the cover and preorder.
Baby Girl will focus on the span of Aaliyah’s life and career—from her earliest beginnings singing in Detroit all the way through to her game-changing musical era with Timbaland, Missy Elliott, and the late Static Major. The book also includes a deep dive into her volatile entanglement with R. Kelly and an intense investigation on the crash that ended her life.
Further, the book examines her cross-cultural impact, as Aaliyah became known as a growing Hollywood star, fashion icon, and hip-hop staple, whose influence is felt in the generations of artists and entertainers that followed her, even with no music available on streaming platforms.
With exclusive interviews, never before told stories, and poignant commentary, Baby Girl: Better Known As Aaliyah is the book that Aaliyah fans have been waiting for, for nearly twenty years.
As Iandoli quoted in Billboard, “I wrote this book as an Aaliyah fan. This is for all of us who for the last twenty years can spot her influence everywhere, while wishing she was still here. I left no stone unturned, and I hope I’ve added to her legacy properly.”
