Letitia James Announces $5 Million Settlement with NWSL Over Abuse

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has agreed to a $5 million settlement following an investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, and Washington, D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb into widespread harassment and sexual misconduct within the league.

The joint investigation found systemic abuse, retaliation, and discrimination, with league officials failing to protect players. The settlement includes player compensation and enforceable reforms to improve safety.

“For too long, the hardworking and talented women of the National Women’s Soccer League were forced to endure an unacceptable culture of abuse, harassment, and retaliation,” James said. “This settlement sends a clear message that such misconduct will not be tolerated and ensures players receive the compensation and protections they deserve.”

The investigation revealed that coaches engaged in verbal abuse, sexual coercion, and racial discrimination for years, with little action from the league. Some were rehired despite prior misconduct.

The settlement mandates stronger vetting for coaches, clear misconduct reporting systems, and mental health resources, including free counseling and access to clinical professionals. The NWSL must report compliance for three years, with penalties for violations.

“This investigation was initiated by the NWSLPA because players refused to stay silent in the face of systemic abuse,” said Meghann Burke, executive director of the players association. “This settlement … establishes enforcement mechanisms under the law to hold NWSL accountable and to prevent future harm.”

Players may still pursue individual legal action against the league or its teams.
