Back in May, another NBA burner account scandal hit the news. This time, it involved long-time NBA referee, Eric Lewis, who has been with the league for 19 seasons. The fiasco all began when a Twitter user, @PabloEscoburner, posted a Twitter thread that allegedly exposed a burner account belonging to Lewis with the user name, @CuttliffBlair.
The burner account’s Tweets go as far back as 2015 and kept track of Lewis’ extensive referee record. It became a platform that Lewis allegedly used to defend not only himself but also other officials against criticism they received for their officiating and controversial calls. The NBA prohibits its referees from publicly commenting on games they’ve officiated.
Nearly three months since this all unfolded, the NBA has sent out a press release announcing Lewis’ retirement. With this announcement, the League has officially closed the case, which makes a lot of us raise an eyebrow and speculate if he had finally folded under the pressure and is now hiding behind his retirement.
