NBA Unveils New All-Star Game Format for 2025 in San Francisco Bay Area

The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association announced a revamped format for the 2025 NBA All-Star Game, introducing a mini-tournament featuring four teams competing in three games. The event will take place on Sunday, Feb. 16, at Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors, and air live at 8 p.m. ET on TNT.

For the first time, the All-Star Game will shift from its traditional format to a series of games. Two semifinal matchups will determine which teams advance to the championship game, with the first team to score 40 points in each contest declared the winner.

Each team will consist of eight players. The 24 All-Star selections will be divided among three teams — Team Chuck, Team Shaq, and Team Kenny — named after TNT analysts Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny Smith, who will draft the rosters live on TNT during the NBA All-Star Draft on Feb. 6.

The fourth team, Team Candace, will feature the winners of the Castrol Rising Stars tournament, held on Friday, Feb. 14. This team will be led by honorary general manager and WNBA legend Candace Parker.

Voting and Coaching Details

The NBA All-Star voting process will remain unchanged, with fans (50%), current players (25%), and media members (25%) determining the five starters from each conference. Coaches will select seven reserves per conference.

Coaching duties for the four teams will fall to staff members from the teams with the best records in each conference as of Sunday, Feb. 2. Head coaches of the Eastern and Western Conference leaders will manage the NBA All-Star teams, while assistant coaches will helm Team Candace and the remaining All-Star team.

Prize Pool and Incentives

Players will compete for a $1.8 million prize pool. Each championship team player will receive $125,000, while runners-up will earn $50,000. Players on the third- and fourth-place teams will each receive $25,000.

NBA All-Star Voting Presented by AT&T

Fan voting for the 2025 All-Star Game starts on Dec. 19 and ends on Jan. 20. Fans can vote via the NBA App or NBA.com using their NBA ID. On select “3-for-1 Days,” fan votes will count triple, incentivizing participation.

Starters will be announced on Jan. 23, with reserves revealed on Jan. 30, both during TNT broadcasts.

With its innovative approach, the 2025 NBA All-Star Game promises a fresh take on one of basketball’s most celebrated events, blending tradition with a dynamic new format.
