In the dictionary, redemption is “the action of regaining or gaining possession of something.” For the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team, that was exactly what they set out to do as they entered the 2008 Beijing games. It’s been nearly 15 years, but the iconic trio of Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, and Lebron James, led that 2008 team to a gold medal, clinching the victory over the most elite basketball teams in the world. And Netflix made sure this legendary moment in sports was documented. Now, “The Redeem Team” is set to debut on the streaming giant’s platform on October 7th!
Archival Olympic footage is hard to come by but the International Olympic Committee granted access to Netflix in order to make this documentary come to life. “This film will bring viewers directly inside that team by showcasing the personality and dynamics of a special group of superstars who came together as one to reclaim basketball supremacy on the biggest stage in sports,” shared Mark Parkman from the Olympic Channel Services (via Netflix).
The documentary was initially announced in August, and Dwayne Wade shared his thoughts as he reflected on that special quest for gold with Kobe, Lebron, Dwight Howard, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, and more.
“In 2008, I played with heroes of mine, all stars, friends, and future teammates. Outside of winning and showing the world that we were still the most dominant, our other big challenge was changing the perception of what everyone thought about the NBA and USA Basketball”– Dwayne Wade
