New York Attorney General Letitia James announced her office is investigating the death of Robert Brooks, who died on Dec. 10 following an encounter with correctional officers at Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County.
The Office of Special Investigation (OSI), a division of the attorney general’s office, is reviewing the use of force by officers that occurred before Brooks’ death. James confirmed that OSI has obtained video footage of the incident, which will be made public after Brooks’ family has had the chance to view it.
“Law enforcement professionals must be held to the highest standards of accountability, and I am committed to providing New Yorkers with the transparency they deserve,” James said in a statement. She expressed condolences to Brooks’ family and loved ones on behalf of her office.
The death of Brooks, who was incarcerated at the time of the incident, has raised questions about the conduct of correctional officers. The attorney general’s office has promised a thorough and transparent investigation.
Marcy Correctional Facility and the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision have not yet commented on the case.
