Pensole Lewis College (PLC) Detroit, the sole design-focused Historically Black College and University (HBCU), is once again setting new standards in design education. Teaming up with global sportswear giant Nike, PLC Detroit has launched a pioneering education initiative called Future Sole | PLC powered by Nike. The aim is to combat the underrepresentation of Black designers in the professional product creation industry and provide avenues for aspiring designers from HBCUs.
The program offers a comprehensive curriculum featuring online and in-person masterclasses covering various aspects of design, including apparel, color theory, materials, footwear, graphics, 3D design, and product marketing. Students enrolled in the program will benefit from a blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, facilitated by three esteemed PLC Detroit department chairs, all of whom are distinguished Nike alumni, providing invaluable mentorship and industry insights.
This groundbreaking partnership underscores Nike, Inc.’s commitment to the Black community, as part of its $40 million investment over four years to promote social justice, education, and tackle racial inequality in the United States.
Led by Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, the founder of PLC Detroit and former design director at Nike’s Jordan brand, the collaboration aims to democratize design education for HBCU students and foster collaboration among HBCUs. Future Sole | PLC will serve as a platform for PLC Detroit to share its industry-approved curriculum and inspire other HBCUs interested in design.
Dr. Edwards emphasized the significance of being instructed by former Nike design directors, describing it as invaluable for students. He believes the program provides a real-world professional environment to hone skills and prepare students for successful careers in design.
The partnership between Nike and PLC Detroit marks a significant milestone, being the first of its kind for any HBCU. It builds upon a longstanding collaboration established in 2018, which includes initiatives such as the Serena Williams Design Crew and the Converse All-Star Design Team, aimed at nurturing diverse talent in footwear, apparel, and accessory design.
“Inclusivity and diversity have long been challenges in the design industry,” said Dr. Edwards, highlighting Nike, Inc.’s pivotal role in providing internships, apprenticeships, and full-time employment opportunities to over 100 PLC Detroit alumni in the last 14 years.
Dr. Edwards’ own track record of success, including the introduction of the Future Sole program during his tenure at Nike in 2008, further underscores the transformative potential of Future Sole | PLC in empowering the next generation of design talent.
The application process for Future Sole | PLC is currently open until June 2, 2024, at 11:59 PM EST. Eligible applicants include HBCU students who have graduated within the past three years, from 2021 to the current semester.
