Recap: The City Council’s 20th Anniversary Sky Blue White Shirt Blue Jeans Event

The City Council, which includes Tammy Ford, Aria F. Wright, Miguel Garcia Junito of IXP Events, Carlito Haciano, and Alanzo Dale of TheMReport (the members of The Block Association), has long established itself as one of the best event promoters in the largest city in the county. This Sunday’s iconic Sky Blue Rooftop Edition—the 20th anniversary of the White Shirt-Blue Jeans event only further solidifies their well-deserved reputation.

Held at The DL Rooftop on Delancey Street in Manhattan, people traveled near and far to attend, attired according to the strictly enforced dress code. Between the guests and the interior design, the overall aesthetic was a sight to behold (think a modern-day melanated Garden of Eden or the fly part of heaven). It was truly wonderful in every way.

DJ Kulcha and DJ Goldfinger took turns spinning the grown and sexy crowd’s favorite songs, spanning the last forty years. If you were born in the 70s or 80s, this was your night, as the music more than likely provoked many of your fondest memories.

More importantly, the promoters have garnered a following of mature adults who not only appreciate the nostalgic curation of music but also value peace and civility. There was no drama or alcohol-fueled loud confrontations. Everyone was on their best behavior, feeling good while looking great. At my age, it’s the only kind of event that I want to attend. Otherwise, don’t even ask, ’cause I’m not going.

Unlike most event hosts, The City Council members patrolled the entire venue, checking in on their guests and ensuring they were having the time of their lives. It was plain to see that a successful night means more than just making a large profit to them. They want you to enjoy yourself and put forth every effort to safeguard that you do.

I would strongly encourage anyone looking for a great experience in New York’s Black culture to plan around their events. In my opinion, no one does it better than them, and it’s not even close. Anytime my schedule will allow, I’m in there.

It’s a beautiful experience with beautiful people. Isn’t that everything we are looking for?
