“I want to clarify that, as was seen in the images, at no time did I consent to the kiss he (Luis Rubiales) gave me.”
There’s no downplaying what Rubiales did. Lewd and predatory are just a couple of words being used to describe his actions. His arrogance matched with his misogynistic views has truly left many shaken. If you’ve been following the story, you’re also probably in a state of disgust. Nearly a week since Rubiales planted an unwanted kiss on the lips of Jenni Hermoso during the Women’s World Cup medal presentation, there has been an unwavering uproar over his actions.
Despite massive backlash and criticism, Rubiales has refused to resign and continues to portray himself as a victim, minimizing the kiss as a simple “peck.” In protest and solidarity, the Spanish women’s team has proclaimed their refusal to play until the leadership of the federation is changed.
“I do not tolerate my word being questioned and much less the invention of words I have not said,” Hermoso stated.
Following Saturday’s statements from all parties involved, Fifa suspended Rubiales. Not long after his suspension, Spain’s entire coaching staff from their World Cup win, except for manager Jorge Vilda, announced their resignation.
