UConn Men’s Basketball Wins 5th NCAA Title

Magic number 5.

The UConn Huskies have won their fifth NCAA title since 1999, and their first since 2014. Last night, in the NCAA national title game, the Huskies proved their dominance in an impressive win over San Diego State. It was a battle on the court between the No. 4 seeded Huskies, and the No. 5 seeded Aztecs.

Dan Hurley kept his promise to his team after proclaiming he would help bring home the fifth title for the UConn Men’s Basketball team at the onset of his head coaching career. Throughout the entire tournament, the Huskies managed to beat every opponent by double digits, and it was no different last night. The Aztecs did not make it an easy run for the Huskies, but the right mix of plays, offensive runs, and defensive stops was just too much for the underdogs. And the top dog, prevailed.

Here are some of our highlights and takeaways from the championship game.

In the second half, the Aztecs cut the Huskies lead to six points, after Keshad Johnson knocked down a much-needed three-pointer. This set off a chain of events include Darrion Trammell’s layup after a UConn turnover. The layup would send the San Diego State fans in a frenzy in the stands. There was hope.

While they put up an impressive fight and run, the Huskies were able to re-gain their momentum, work together, and finish the job they came to do – bring home trophy no. 5 to Storrs, CT.

Standout players for the Huskies include Adama Sanogo, whose game and intensity was beyond electrifying all tournament long. He was a critical component to last night’s victory. Sanogo finished with 17 points, on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, and 7-of8 from the free throw line. He also contributed 10 rebounds and one massive block – earning him the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament. Respectfully.

UConn, including both their mens and women’s basketball programs, has nearly solidified their legacy as the basketball capital of college basketball. For coach, he earns his FIRST national title, and we’re sure there’s more to come.

Final Score: 76-59
