Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, domestic violence has been on a growing trend. Editor-in-Chief Dakari Eli wanted Urban Magazine do its part in turning the tide with a special feature for October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Be’n Original, the magazine’s publisher, recruited five of his friends to share their experiences with abuse in their own words with hopes to not only raise awareness, but to also empower those in dire circumstance to seek help.

“Having friends and family members who have suffered physical and emotional abuse, we wanted to tackle the subject from the perspective of four women who have escaped physically abusive straight and same sex relationships. Additionally, we included someone who is currently suffering from emotional abuse in a toxic situation today,” explains Be’n. “Who better to share their stories than those who experienced domestic abuse first-hand.”

Dakari Eli reached out to past collaborator and master photographer Shas Smith whose powerful visual covers this issue with additional images inside.

“Shas is one of the most creatively brilliant photographer on the planet. We are always happy to showcase her work whenever possible.”

Other features include Black-ish actress and recording artist Katlyn Nichol, singer/songwriter Sky Heavens, Jason Mott, Evelyn Braxton, Hamilton actress/singer Meecah and more.

If you are a victim of domestic violence, please call the national hotline as soon as possible, 1-800-799-SAFE.
