US Navy Alters Policy Allowing for Natural Hairstyles

On July 19 Black US servicewomen will be able to wear their natural hair, as a new hair policy will take effect.

The amazing news was revealed on Tuesday via a Facebook live video hosted by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson and Chief of Naval Personnel Adm. Robert Burke. A first class sailor LaToya Jones had the honors of making the announcement.

According to AP News the new policy “affect[s] women of color most directly.” The change comes after a longstanding battle of Black servicewomen voicing their want to wear a variety of hairstyles, whether that be their natural hairstyles, braids, and dread locs.

The state of Black women’s hair is always at the forefront in the job field. Some women even straighten their hair just to secure a decent job, so this is a big win for the natural hair community!
