Vic Mensa Unveils Short Film ‘Blue Eyes’ Confronting Beauty Standards

Rapper and producer Vic Mensa has just released a powerful short film called “Blue Eyes,” which also serves as a music video for a song from his latest album, VICTOR. Shot in Jamaica and directed by his longtime friend Andre Muir, the film dives into Vic’s personal struggles growing up biracial and speaks out against harmful beauty standards.

In this emotional piece, Vic opens up about how European beauty ideals affected his life and the tragic loss of his aunt due to skin bleaching. The film shows him fighting against someone trying to drown him in a river, representing the pressures society puts on us. Jamaican locals also share stories about the history and dangers of skin bleaching.

One powerful moment shows a woman wearing a blond wig, a symbol of conforming to these standards. But as the film progresses, she removes it, showing the strength in being true to oneself.

“The song ‘Blue Eyes’ is one of the most personal I’ve ever made and illustrates the impact of European beauty standards on the mind of the African, using my experience and that of my aunt who recently passed from the effects of skin bleaching.”
